Newly bought puppy will nearly always be house- break and one has to be very patient with them. Puppies have very little capacity to hold stools or urine. Puppies have common tendency to pass urine just after getting up and passing stools just after taking feed. Easiest method to potty train puppies is to take them outside (with in boundaries of house) just when it is expected. Some puppies learn this habit very quickly while many others can get accustomed to it slowly.

   Despite many efforts one can expect puppies to house break so one have just to be consistent. Puppies have tendency to pass stools and urine at places where they can smell previous traces of these so it is good to apply some strong smelling disinfectant (like Lizol ,Dettol etc) after cleaning their mess.

    Do not punish or shout at the dog after it has already passed stools as puppy will not be able to correlate your behavior with his act and will only make the pet scared of you. If pup is caught in the act just quickly take him to the intended area (may be a toilet, corridor, a newspaper on floor of puppy’s room in case you want to paper-train the pup). In paper-training remove only upper dirtier layer of paper while keeping some wet layers intact so that puppy can smell previous residues and keep on adding new layers from below. Praise and reward the puppy after it has passed stools in the intended area.

   When puppy grows up and is fully vaccinated (a non vaccinated pup can catch deadly infections like parvo and distemper if taken in areas where stray dogs have access) it should be taken for small walks very frequently outside the house may be 4-5 times a day to cultivate the habit.

   If puppy has grown up and is still house -break one can tie puppy with leash or keep him in a crate and take out puppy at expected times frequently for small walks praise and reward with a hidden treat when desired action is completed.Main idea behind leash or crate training is that a puppy will almost never pass a stool where it sits.

   In rare cases some puppies that were not properly potty trained in earlier life may have to be kept for hours in the intended area after heavy feeding to get them accustomed, just reward and praise them after that. In these cases try to spread some residues of the puppy’s shit in places where puppy is desired to pass stools so that it can smell them.

   Some puppies can be potty trained in few days while some can take months so one has to be patient.
